Updating Oregon Ducks WBB Portal Activity
For the first time in recent memory, Oregon women’s basketball did not lose any players to the transfer portal after last season. The reason for this is twofold: Oregon had already lost a lot of the star talent that they recruited out of high school in previous seasons, and there was considerable senior and transfer attrition from players playing their final season last year with the Ducks.
Oregon women’s basketball has signed the following player for next season:
Astera Tuhina – Washington State
5-9 Sr. G Astera Tuhina is originally from Pristina, Kosovo. She spent the last three seasons at WSU, making 68 starts and appearing in 96 games. Last season, Tuhina started in all 35 of WSU’s games, averaging 31.2 MPG and 7.8 PPG. She shot .364 from the field and from distance, and 73% at the line. Her A/TO rate last season was 130-66, or 1.97 to 1.
Tuhina is a solid player that should have an immediate impact in this coming season.
Mia Jacobs – Fresno State
6-2 Sr. F Mia Jacobs played the last two seasons at Fresno State and is originally from Perth, Australia. Last season she started in all 34 of FSU’s games, averaging 33 MPG and 18.3 PPG. Jacobs was tied in seventh place nationally with 19 double-doubles. She shot .408 from the field, .380 from distance, and 85% from the line. Her A/TO rate was .66 to 1.
It’s a bit of a jump to go from the Big West to the Big Ten, but Jacobs has promising numbers in the right places and should be a positive addition for the Ducks.
Avary Cain – UCLA
On a very talented UCLA squad that appeared in the Final Four last season, there was not much room for 6-1 Fr. G Avary Cain. That says a lot for the talent level at UCLA, because Cain was a 5* recruit that was the #20 prospect nationally and a #5 guard and player in California. She only appeared in 18 games, and the vast majority of her points and minutes was in the preseason.
We shall see if Kelly Graves can do to other teams what was done to the Ducks recently – snag a 5* recruit that’s not entirely happy with her present team, and do something with them. The opportunity for Cain to play and shine is there; the rest is up to her.
Oregon has 14 players on the roster. Their only problem is the lack of height – Sr. Amina Muhammad is the tallest player at 6-4. If the Ducks can get another post player then they can rest a bit easier. If not, we’re going to really be missing the presence and play of Phillipina Kyei.
