It was another busy day in the world of Oregon Athletics Friday, with Men’s Hoops in Indiana for the Big Ten Tournament, Baseball in Eugene, and Softball up in Seattle.
Two of the three went quite well.
To start the day men’s basketball earned their rematch with top seeded Michigan State, a team they started off mightily against in February but fizzled out at the end.
Now riding an eight game winning streak in typical Altman March style, the Ducks hoped they could overcome the juggernaut Spartans.
But it wasn’t to be.
Michigan State started off with an 8-0 run, but Oregon battled back to go ahead 17-15. An 11-2 run by MSU, however, gave them a ten point halftime lead.
The Ducks played the Spartans to a stand-still in the second half, which wasn’t enough as they needed to overcome a deficit, and the final was 74-64.
On the heels of their late season surge, Oregon will await their positioning in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, likely looking at a 4 or 5 seed.
Back home in Eugene, Baseball opened their series against Minnesota on a rather dreary day, but one that nonetheless yielded victory.
The No. 9 Ducks stayed undefeated in conference play as a four run second inning powered them to a 5-2 victory over Minnesota. Grayson Grinsell threw five scoreless innings for Oregon on the mound. The Ducks continue their series with the Golden Gophers today.
Up in soggy Seattle, Softball was firing on all cylinders as they turned the “Dawgs” into puppies with a 9-0 thrashing of Washington. The No. 8 Ducks earned their first victory in conference play in six innings behind a dominant pitching performance from Lyndsey Grein.
On the offensive side of the ball, Kate Flannery belted two homers and drove in five runs total for Oregon, who sits at an impressive 25-2 and continues their series against the Huskies today at noon.
