It was quite a thrilling wrap-up for the Track and Field Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach.
The Women of Oregon won their eighth indoor national title Saturday, showing off their depth across event groups, the Ducks scored 55 points across six events during the two-day meet.
The Ducks got a national title performance from Wilma Nielsen in the mile and runner-up finishes by Jadyn Mays in the 60 and 200 meters, Aaliyah McCormick in the 60 hurdles and Jaida Ross in the shot put. The NCAA team title is a first for head coach Jerry Schumacher at Oregon, and his third overall.
On the Men’s side, Matthew Erickson has been voted the Big Ten Men’s In door Track Athlete of the Year after sweeping the Big Ten and NCAA indoor titles at 800 meters and helping the Men of Oregon win the Big Ten Championships earlier this month.
Erickson accounted for 13 points at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with this victory in the 800 and sixth-place finish over 600 meters. His time of 1:46.58 in the Big Ten prelims moved him into the top 16 to qualify for the NCAA meet. Erickson also split 1:45.35 for the Ducks’ DMR that qualified for nationals at the Arkansas Qualifier.
