With a move into a conference not necessarily known for juggernaut baseball squads, it looked as though Oregon’s blazing bats could carry them even further in 2025 than they had gone in 2024, when they made the Super Regional.

That meant a trip to Omaha, and admittedly, at regular season’s end it didn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

Heading into Big Ten play, the Ducks were already in a fairly good spot with only three losses to show and a win in every series.

The first series loss for Oregon occurred in Columbus to the Buckeyes, and that was followed up by a rather inexplicable single game loss to Portland.

The Ducks continued to win series, but none were sweeps.

That is, until they squared off with baseball titan and longtime rival Oregon State.

Across three games in Eugene and one in Corvallis, the Ducks went 4-0. The first time since 2018 that they’d swept the Beavs. In the second game, they even put up 13 runs.

Oregon finished the season from that point red-hot, going 10-1. Heading into the Big Ten Tournament, they had won 14 of 15 and were regular season conference champions.

Their flame was finally doused by Nebraska in the second round but the Ducks looked to be in prime position for a run to Omaha as long as there were no major letdowns.

Spoiler Alert: There was a major letdown.

Hosting the regionals in Eugene, a place they had surprisingly experienced majority of their losses in 2025, bowed right out of the postseason with back-to-back losses to Utah Valley and Cal Poly, the latter of which put up 10 runs.

So in conclusion, after years of battling against the same nagging problem, the Ducks were faced with…the same nagging problem.

Offense wins games, defense wins championships. It’s the truth across all major team sports, and the primary defense against OBP and RBIs is pitching.

The Ducks still…don’t have…pitching!

At least, not the level of it a true contender needs.

Until Oregon can get their hands on at least three pitchers that pose a real threat, and preferably, and ace of their own, expect more of the same.

Flashy, entertaining, but not in line for a trip to Omaha.
