The Best Portland Trail Blazers Dunks of the Past 25 Years
The NBA released a video on Saturday counting down the league’s top 100 dunks of the past quarter-century.
Spoiler Alert! Blake Griffin came in at No. 3, followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo at No. 2. And the player with the best dunk over the last 25 years was… (Hey, I’m not going to spoil all the fun! You’ll have to watch the video to find out. Hint: It’s probably not who you’d expect!).
Unfortunately, the Portland Trail Blazers were only featured once. Brandon Roy’s dribble-drive to the hoop followed by an aggressive in-your-face stuff against the L.A. Clippers came in at No. 93.
But let’s stop and think for a moment. What have been some of the most memorable dunks by a Blazers player over the last two and a half decades? Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order…
Anfernee Simons (Nearly) Kisses the Rim
It’s not every year a Portland player is featured in the NBA’s All-Star Dunk Contest. But in 2021, Anfernee Simons got his chance to represent. His hops brought oohs and ahhs from the crowd culminating in a “kiss the rim” spectacle that earned him and the Blazers their first (and only) Slam Dunk Championship.
Andre Miller’s Fast Break One-Handed Slam
Miller was not known for his athleticism, much less his dunking ability. But one fine day in 2011 while Portland was playing in Denver, Miller got the ball on a fast break and let loose. His one-handed Jordan-esque stuff places him among the Blazers’ best.
Shaedon Sharpe’s 45.1-Inch Vertical Skyscraper Slam
We all know what Shaedon can do. Since being selected by Portland No. 7 overall in the 2022 NBA draft, he has wowed crowds with his inhuman athleticism. But perhaps the best put down of them all came this season against the Utah Jazz. Sharpe rose up a whopping 45.1 inches before throwing down a monstrous dunk against the Jazz. No other NBA player has topped Sharpe’s height since the NBA began keeping vertical leap stats in 2023.
Damian Lillard’s Between-the-Legs Poster Dunk
Lillard is no stranger to NBA All-Star weekend, earning a trip eight times. But when you think of Dame’s All-Star history, you probably remember the games. But in 2010, Lillard put on a show during the All-Star weekend dunk competition. His between-the-legs throw-down may not have won him the blue ribbon, but it did get featured on the cover of the NBA 2K21 video game. Props to Logo Lillard on this one!
Brandon Roy’s Ferocious Facial
Roy is one of the most beloved Blazers in the team’s 55-year history. “The Natural” as he was called could seemingly do it all. Unfortunately for Roy and the Blazers, his career was cut short by injuries. But before his early retirement, Brandon served up a true classic in 2009. His ultra-aggressive in-your-face stuff (featured as No. 93 on the NBA’s list — see above) deserves a look.
So now I throw the ball back to you, the Blazers faithful. What dunks brought you out of your seat over the last 25 years? Let us know in the comments section below!
