Property Watch: Million-Dollar Homes for Sale Across Portland, Oregon

This foursquare in North Portland’s Overlook neighborhood is a short walk from Overlook Park and the Skidmore Bluffs, two spots with million-dollar sunset views.

We’ve rounded up six homes currently for sale around $1 million to see what they have to offer. The result is a mix of classics, like bungalows and foursquares from the turn of the century, with newer kids on the block, such as a condo in a converted trolley station. Many on the list have remodeled kitchens, two have potential Airbnb quarters, but only one is an utterly unique 1990s floating home on the Willamette River. We’re still Portland, after all, even at this price tag.

Overlook

The foursquare is a classic American housing type, and this 1910 version in the Overlook neighborhood makes it easy to see why. They’re typically tall, boxy, and spacious. Here, that means over 3,000 square feet with two floors, an unfinished attic, and full guest quarters in the basement, currently used as an income-producing Airbnb. It’s a floor plan that feels both generous and accommodating, made especially so by a 2014 remodel by Portland firm Arciform, and the big front porch, lovely kitchen with island seating, and a surprise hot tub tucked into the back deck.

Mount Tabor

This midcentury (1961) in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood makes all the right moves, whether it’s the preserved features, like the tongue-and-groove vaulted ceilings and two brick fireplaces, or the wide range of upgrades throughout. The latter includes things big and small, from a new roof and gutters, to pretty quartz counters and Rejuvenation hardware in the kitchen, and floating decks and raised garden beds in the backyard. Then there’s what will never change: the incredible views from the main living spaces, complete with two sliding-glass doors to a rear deck, perfect for watching the sun set over the city.

Northwest District

From the outside, this former three-bay garage on the corner of NW Savier Street and NW 28th Avenue looks much the same as when it was built in 1914, from the double-stepped gabled parapet roofs, to the brick facade and row of double-hung windows. Having been converted into condos in recent decades, now the old roll-up doors have been swapped out for private entries to the six units. Inside this one, exposed brick walls and heavy-duty ceiling trusses meet sleek wood floors and airy, open-concept loft vibes, as well as three bedrooms, two with en-suite bathrooms, and a rooftop deck.

An Architect-Designed Floating Home for $1,199,000

Sellwood

Designed and built in 1994 by architect Richard Lakeman, this floating home has a nickname among the neighbors: “The Great Circle,” so-called for its distinct 19-foot-wide circular window on the riverside facade. Inside, the accents veer industrial (an exposed metal ceiling in the great room), nautical (a rounded ceiling upstairs that looks like a boat), and quirky (the back-lit acrylic steps into the sunken living room). But such an up-close perch on the river can’t be beat. This being located in the Portland Rowing Club, you’re also a short walk from the Springwater Trail and Southeast 13th Avenue’s many restaurants and shops.

West Slope

A recent remodel of this 1961 home by Ashley Kiely Living has given it designer details in every room. They kept original details such as the mahogany doors and red oak floors, then zhuzhed the kitchen with custom cabinets, honed quartz counters, and a Venetian plaster stove hood, and added gorgeous statement tile to the bathrooms. With five bedrooms, two family rooms (one on each floor), and a half-acre lot, there’s a lot of space to spread out here. All the better that there’s also a speakeasy behind a hidden door for when it’s time to curl up with a cocktail.

Laurelhurst

It’s hard to imagine what this 1922 bungalow must have looked like before Street of Dreams designer Jody Wallace took hold of it. Certainly not as polished as it does now, after a recent top-to-bottom renovation. We mean that literally, seeing as how the project included redoing the roof, foundation, and all of the mechanical systems and wiring in between. The finishes are on-point, with a mix of original detailing, like the floors, windows, and French doors, combined with fresh bathrooms, kitchen, and that most popular modern amenity: a potential Airbnb rental in the basement.
