Portland’s Last Lesbian Bar Doc Marie’s Closes on Halloween

CULLY — A tipster tells Eater PDX that New Zealand-style ice cream shop Nico’s Ice Cream closed its original location at 5713 NE Fremont Street. A sign taped to the door reads in part, “Unfortunately, due to ongoing building issues outside of our control, we have to say goodbye to this location.” The Nico’s location in Killingsworth remains open.
PEARL — Cider Bite closed the taps permanently on Sunday, October 19, after 10 years in business. Citing challenges over the years, such as the pandemic shutdown, rising operation costs, and break-ins, owner Jeff Hanneson wrote in a farewell note on the site, “With our lease set to expire at the end of October and the landlord requiring higher rent and expenses under a long-term agreement, we were unable to secure an acceptable and sustainable extension that would allow us to continue.” He thanked family, friends, patrons, and staff for the support over the years.
LLOYD — After 16 years in business, Upright Brewing is set to close its original location and cease brewing operations toward the end of the year, the Oregonian reports. The brewery at 240 N Broadway will close “in a couple of months,” the brand announced in an Instagram post on Tuesday, September 30, while the taproom and food cart pod on NE Prescott Street will undergo a “minor rebrand” that will see its taps filled with beer from other breweries.
RICHMOND — The Richmond Bar closed on Friday, October 17, capping off 13 years in business. No reason was given for the closure in the bar’s Instagram announcement. “Thanks to the neighborhood that embraced us, our regulars and our staff through all the years for everything,” the post reads in part.
BUCKMAN — There are just two days left to visit Doc Marie’s, which closes on Friday, October 31. The lesbian bar opened in 2022. In its note announcing the closure, the owners write that 2025 “has been a devastating year for small businesses and for our community and we don’t have the finances to keep our doors open.” Things haven’t always been smooth for the bar; it briefly closed a few months into its run due to alleged mismanagement by the owners, but ultimately reopened after six weeks. The bar is generally considered to be the last lesbian bar in Portland.
