Portland Trail Blazers Add James Posey as Assistant Coach

The Portland Trail Blazers have added James Posey as an assistant coach on head coach Chauncey Billups’ staff, the organization announced Thursday.

Posey, 48, arrives in Portland with 25 years of NBA experience as a player and coach. He won three NBA titles during that span, capturing two as a player (2006, 2008) and one as an assistant coach (2016).

Most recently, Posey spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. Before that, Posey spent two seasons as an assistant with the Washington Wizards from 2022 to 2024. From 2014 to 2019, Posey served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, working on a staff that made four consecutive NBA Finals appearances and won the 2016 title.

Posey played 12 seasons in the NBA from 1999 to 2011, splitting time between seven different franchises. The 6-foot-8 forward won the NBA title in 2006 with the Miami Heat and the 2008 title with the Boston Celtics.

Posey’s arrival in Portland will also reunite past connections. Posey played with Billups on the Denver Nuggets during the 1999-00 season. He also served as an assistant coach with the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball team during the 2021-22 season under head coach Tina Thompson, who now serves as a Trail Blazers scout.
