Poll: Who’s The Best Active Oregon Alum in MLB?
With the CWS wrapping up this weekend, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the active former Ducks playing in the MLB right now. There’s not a ton at the moment, but that will be a different story in the next few years, as the Ducks have had 12 players drafted in the past three drafts, they just haven’t quite made it to The Show quite yet. But, anyways, let’s get to it!
First up, we’ve got LHP Tyler Anderson (Duck in 2011), currently pitching for the Los Angeles Angels. At time of writing Tyler has 2-4 record, with a 4.44 ERA this season, but was an All-Star in both 2022 (as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers), and 2024 as an Angel. He has a career record of 62-68, with a 4.28 ERA, over 10 seasons.
Next up, Anderson’s teammate RHP Scott McGough (2011), who debuted with the Miami Marlins in 2015, and then bounced around the Minor Leagues and with the Yakult Swallows of the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization in Japan, before coming back the MLB with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he’s been since 2023. He has an MLB career record of 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA, but had an NBP record of 15-8 with a 2.94 ERA.
Up next is Garrett Cleavinger (2013-2015), a RHP currently playing for the Tampa Bay Rays. Cleavinger has been one of the premiere relief pitchers in baseball since 2021, posting a 3.37 ERA across 153 career appearances. At time of writing, he is currently having the best season of his career, with a 2.25 ERA and 35 strikeouts over his 30 appearances.
Let’s go with Clevinger’s teammate on the Rays, OF Johnny DeLuca (2018-2019). DeLuca debuted with the LA Dodgers in 2023, playing in 24 games and hitting .262 before getting traded to the Rays in December of 2023. He would play in 107 games for Tampa Bay in 2024, hitting .217 and stealing 16 bases. He is currently on the 60-day Injured List, after playing just nine games to start the 2025 season.
Next up is Cincinatti Reds 1B and LF Spencer Steer (2017-2019). Steer has played his entire career with the Reds, getting called up in 2022. Over that span, he is hitting .242 with 51 homeruns and 210 RBI over 409 games. He is currently hitting .225 in 67 games at time of writing, after a breakout 2023 season where he hit .271 with 23 HRs and 86 RBI in 156 games.
Up next is Matt Krook (2014-2016), a LHP currently pitching for the (city name omitted) Athletics. He has not pitched much at the Big-League level, with just eight appearances over the last three seasons. for his career he has a 0-0 record with a 16.20 ERA.
Next is David Peterson (2015-2017), yet another LHP, for the New York Mets. Peterson has spent his entire six-year career with the Mets, where he has gone 33-26 with a 3.85 ERA. He is currently in the middle of his best season in the Bigs as well, sitting at 5-2 with a cool 2.60 ERA over 14 starts. He has also thrown the only complete game shutout in the MLB, at the time of writing, which it pretty neat.
And finally, we have Ryne Nelson (2017-2019), a RHP for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has spent his entire four-year career in Arizona, going 22-17 with a 4.51 ERA over 75 games (60 starts). Nelson is currently in the middle of a weird season, where he was originally stuck in the bullpen, but due to other pitchers getting injured, has been reinserted into the rotation. He is currently sitting on a 3-2 record with a 4.14 ERA over 15 games (5 starts).
So, there you have it. Who do you think is the best active alum? And, as always, ‘Sco Ducks!
