Oregon Hockey: ASU/GSU recaps – Addicted To Quack

The Ducks hockey team were in Arizona this past weekend to play 3 games. 1 against Arizona States ACHA team and 2 games against Grand Canyon. The Ducks lost all 3 games losing 3-2 in Overtime against the Sun Devils and then losing 10-0 against Grand Canyon on Saturday and 4-3 against Grand Canyon on Sunday.

The games against Arizona State was a hard fought game were the Ducks came up just short. The games Grand Canyon were not streamed on YouTube so I was unable to watch and track these games.

Here are the team stats I track from the game against Arizona State:

Shots:

Oregon – 25

Arizona State – 48

Total High Danger Chances:

Oregon – 10

Arizona State – 12

High Danger Chances 5 on 5:

Oregon – 8

Arizona State – 11

Power-play: 100% (1/1)

Penalty Kill: 100% (2/2)

As you can from the disparity between the shot differential and the high danger chances differential the shot clock was quite misleading. I thought overall this was a pretty evenly played game and Arizona State was slightly better.

After an even opening 15 minutes of play Arizona State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in quick succession at the end of the first. They carried that momentum into the start of the second and for the 15 minute stretch of the end of the first and start of the second period the Sun Devils had the ice quite tilted. But the final 10-15 minutes of the second was the best stretch of the game for Oregon and they were able to tie the game with 5 seconds left thanks to an incredible no look pass to set-up Carson Streich on the power-play.

The third period was quite uneventful, save for one Arizona State chance that went off the cross-bar and stayed out, as it felt like both teams were playing to pick up at least one point in overtime.

In the end a lost puck battle in 3 on 3 overtime lead to an Arizona State 2 on 0 that they would bury to win the game.

The best Duck player on the ice was probably their goaltender George Serbin. While he only had a little bit more quality to deal with he had a lot of volume to stop and gave the Ducks a chance to win.

Also wanted to shout-out the Ducks special teams going perfect. Capitalizing on their only Power-Play and killing both Arizona State penalties. In a close game this probably was the second biggest factor for the Ducks picking up a point.

The Ducks are back in action next weekend when they host undefeated division 2 powerhouse Cal back in Eugene for games on Saturday and Sunday.
