Oregon Guts Out A Win Over Washington, 26-14

The Ducks faced the Huskies this afternoon under cloudy skies and moderate (for November) temperatures. Weather was not going to be a huge factor in today’s contest.

Oregon won the toss and deferred to the second half. Washington took the touchback on kickoff and began their drive on the 25-yard line. Complicated by a 2nd down sack, the Huskies went three-and-out and punted, and the Ducks started their drive on their 29-yard line.

Oregon got into Washington territory with a big pass from Dante Moore to Jeremiah McClellan. Two more shots that did not work out forced the Ducks to go for a field goal, a 46-yard kick that was good. Oregon 3, Washington 0.

The Huskies started their second drive with an Oregon sack – their second sack in as many drives. Although they made it back to the original line of scrimmage, that’s all the Huskies would get and they punted.

The Ducks started the next drive with decent field position, at their own 37-yard line. The drive fizzled, Oregon went three-and-out, and punted.

Starting at their 15-yard line, the Huskies drove to midfield and then stalled. They punted, and after a touchback the Ducks began their next drive on the 20-yard line. The Huskies drove and were nearly in the red zone, but an interception in front of the end zone by Jadon Canady ended Washington’s threat.

With 2:46 left in the first quarter, Oregon attempted to get some points on the scoreboard. They got to their 44-yard line when time expired in the quarter. First Quarter – Oregon 3, Washinton 0.

Oregon began a clock-chewing drive down the field. A mix of rush and passing helped advance the drive, which was kept alive by a 4th and 3 pass to Malik Benson for the first down. Faced with 4th and 8 on the Washington 14-yard line, Atticus Sappington kicked another field goal, with this one good from 32 yards. Oregon 13, Washington 0.

The Huskies had a little over three minutes to try and put something together. The Ducks helped with a pass interference penalty that brought Washington to their 40-yard line. The Huskies were able to sustain the drive, pushing to the Oregon 3-yard line, but the Ducks then pushed the Huskies back to the 7-yard line. Demond Williams, Jr. got the yardage back, and then followed it with a touchdown throw to get Washington on the board just before time expired in the half. Halftime Score – Oregon 13, Washington 7.

Having deferred at kickoff, Oregon took the ball to start the third quarter. The play of the Ducks was spotty, but it looked like they might drive for a score. Alas, no; Oregon drove to the UW 19-yard line, but stalled and had to settle for yet another field goal. Oregon 16, Washington 7.

After a touchback, Washington started from their 25-yard line. A couple of big plays got UW into Oregon territory. The Ducks defense clamped down and ended the drive, forcing Washington to punt, and with the Ducks on their 6-yard line, they were going to have to put together their best drive of the day if they were going to cap it with a touchdown.

The Oregon running game was nonexistent today, so it was going to take a string of passes to keep any drives alive. Moore hit a big pass to McClellan to get to midfield, and then a pass interference penalty took the Ducks to the UW 35-yard line.

And then, as the football gods would seem to dictate this day, the drive sputtered and Oregon tried for another field goal – this one from 51 yards away.

Atticus Sappington rose to the occasion, with his fourth field goal of the day. Oregon 19, Washington 7.

The Huskies picked up a first down on their next possession and would go no further. They punted, and Oregon took over on their 17-yard line, with 52 seconds left in the third quarter. Third Quarter – Oregon 19, Washington 7.

With a bad handoff, Oregon failed to convert and Washington took over on downs at their 13-yard line. They would reach their 19-yard line at the two-minute mark.

Oregon intercepted at the 1:20 mark and would take a knee to the final score. Oregon 26, Washington 14.
