Oregon Ducks Sunday Sports Recaps

Lacrosse vs. Northwestern

The #3 Northwestern Wildcats got off to a hot start against Oregon, pulling away in the 2nd period to establish a lead that the Ducks could not surmount, and won yesterday’s match 19-10.

The Wildcats could not be stopped in the second period, where they scored 10 points to lead 17-5 at the half.

The Ducks played much more competitively in the 2nd half, and kept NU from scoring in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Northwestern had 21 shots on goal in the first half, and 6 in the second half. Madison Taylor was their scoring leader with 7 goals in the game.

Oregon had difficulty with draw controls; the Wildcats had 20 in the first three periods to 8 for the Ducks.

Bri Carrasquillo scored four goals in the match, with Rachel Pallo and Anna Simmons each scoring two.

Northwestern is 5-0 and undefeated in conference play, while Oregon has no victories in-conference. Their last chance to get a B1G win will be on Saturday against USC, which has a 2-5 conference record.

Softball vs. Minnesota – Game 3

Oregon softball picked up Game 3 of their series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 5-4, notching their fourth Big Ten sweep in the process.

Lyndsey Grein took the circle for the Ducks, and she proceeded to keep the Gophers off the board through the first five innings with some help from Oregon’s outstanding defense.

The Ducks scored first in the third inning. Paige Sinicki reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Kedre Luschar followed by bringing her home with a 2-RBI homer.

In the fifth inning, the Ducks got a couple of runners on base and then picked up two quick outs. Oregon has done well this season getting scores with two outs, and they did it again when Ayanna Shaw hit a single that brought the runners home, extending Oregon’s lead to 4-0.

Braiesey Rosa followed with a single that scored another run.

The Ducks were feeling comfortable going into the bottom of the sixth inning with a 5-0 lead. Unfortunately, in the 6th inning the wheels completely fell off for Grein. She loaded the bases with a couple of singles, followed by hitting the next batter with a pitch. Minnesota launched a grand slam, and the ball game immediately became unnecessarily interesting.

Elise Sokolsky stepped in and eliminated any further damage. She threw 4 Ks with no BB and no hits, putting down the rest of the Gophers lineup in order in the final two innings that she pitched.

Oregon softball is now locked in a conference tie for the lead with UCLA. That’s a huge series with national implications, and it will be at the Jane this coming weekend. Before then is a midweek game against the Beavers in Corvallis, and the Ducks cannot afford to look ahead to the Bruins and drop the game against OSU.

Baseball vs. Maryland – Game 3

After being humiliated by a Game 2 run-rule loss against the Maryland Terrapins, Oregon baseball responded nicely with a 13-3 win in Game 3 to take the series.

The win was made possible by a solid outing by starter Jason Reitz, who kept the bullpen off the mound for seven innings and pitched a career performance in the process.

You didn’t get the sense that’s the way the game would turn out by how it started, however. Oregon did not score in the first inning. Reitz started shakily in the bottom of the inning, and with runners on second and third with one out, an RBI single brought the runners home.

Oregon got on the board in the third inning, scoring two but squandering a bases-loaded situation with one out, tying the game at 2-2.

After an uneven first inning, Reitz composed himself and pitched very well in the rest of his outing.

The Ducks loaded the bases again in the fourth inning with one out, and scored a run when Jacob Walsh walked, but squandered another prime opportunity for additional runs, ending the top of the 4th with runners left on all the bases.

In the bottom of the inning, the Terps put a runner in scoring position on a rare Ducks fielding error, and a ground-out scored the runner, tying the game at 3-3.

And that’s all that Maryland would score. Meanwhile, Oregon set about putting the game away with a monster fifth inning. With two outs, power hitting ruled the inning – first with a 3-RBI shot by Mason Neville.

Two batters later, Jacob Walsh delivered a two-run shot over the center field wall.

The Ducks were up 8-3, but it was only the fifth inning, and there was plenty of time left for things to go south.

Fortunately, Jason Reitz saved his best for last, fanning the Terrapins batters left and right over the next three innings.

Oregon added a run in the sixth, and was scoreless in the seventh and eighth inning. Rietz finished strong through the seventh inning.

Santiago Garcia pitched for the Ducks in the eighth inning, and even though he tried to gift the Terps some runs – he walked three batters – he was able to get outs from the other three batters, and Oregon came away unscathed.

The Ducks added another four in the top of the ninth with a small-ball rally. I’ll just let the videos explain Oregon’s four-run inning:

Cole Stokes came to the mound in the bottom of the ninth, did his job, and Oregon won the series with a 13-3 Game 3 victory.

Here is your final line:

Coach Waz had a few comments after the game:

Baseball wraps up their road trip with a VERY early game against Georgetown this morning. You can see it on the CBS Sports Network.
