Luka Doncic Agrees to a 3-Year Extension with Lakers
Luka Doncic has committed to the Los Angeles Lakers with a three-year contract extension. Shams Charania of ESPN reports that Doncic and the Lakers have agreed to the deal with a player option in 2028. It’s a maximum extension worth $165 million.
Doncic previously had a player option for 2026-27, meaning that he could have chosen to become a free agent after the conclusion of the upcoming 2025-26 season. This new extension takes that possibility off of the table.
The last year of the new extension also has a player option. Doncic could opt out in the summer of 2028, making him eligible to sign a new deal with the Lakers for 35% of the salary cap.
The Lakers traded for Doncic shortly before the trade deadline on February 2, 2025 in a three-team deal with the Dallas Mavericks and the Utah Jazz. The Lakers received Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris and minor cash considerations. The Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second round picks. The Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, a Lakers 2029 1st round pick and minor cash considerations. The trade has been widely criticized as wildly lopsided in favor of the Lakers.
Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists with the Mavericks and the Lakers over 50 total games between the two teams.
