The 76-year-old, who has coached the Spurs since 1996, suffered the stroke on November 2, 2024. Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson has stepped in as Interim, leading the young group – including Victor Wembanyama – to a 24-33 record.
The franchise sits 13th in the Western Conference, just below the Portland Trail Blazers, with Wembanyama out for the rest of the season.
Popovich has spearheaded five titles for the Texas franchise, raising the Larry O’Brien trophy in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. He’s been named NBA Coach of the year three times in 2003, 2012 and 2014 and has served as an All-Star game head coach in 2005, 2011, 2013 and 2016.
Popovich also led Team USA to a gold medal at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic games.
