Dorothea Lensch, 1969 | Vintage Portland

Dorothea Lensch (left) was named the first Portland Director of Recreation in 1937. She revitalized the bureau with a renewed focus on arts, dance, and sports for women and people with disabilities. “Our philosophy,” she said in 1972,” was that there be in recreation a blending of physical, cultural and social programs, community centers and playgrounds.”

Lensch documented her early work in the Parks & Recreation Bureau through through a series of scrapbooks. The Portland City Archives just completed a digitizing the scrapbooks, so this early history can be more accessible to the public.
