California Burger Chain In-N-Out Might Demolish a Vacant Shari’s to Open in Gresham
As In-N-Out continues its expansion plans throughout Oregon, it seems the latest town to catch the attention of the Double-Double titan is Gresham. As the Outlook reports, In-N-Out is entering the confusingly named pre-application process with the city to take over the former Shari’s Cafe & Pies location inside the Oregon Trail Shopping Center on Northeast Burnside Road. The pre-application was submitted to Gresham on Friday, February 7, according to the report.
Among the tentative plans for the potential In-N-Out is the demolition of Shari’s Cafe and “part of the existing multi-tenant commercial structure” leading to the construction of a 2,886-square-foot In-N-Out, the Outlook states. Notably for traffic-averse neighbors, the California-based burger chain is looking to construct a 37-vehicle queue for its drive-thru, as well as reduce parking spaces from 129 spots down to 95.
If you are wondering what, exactly, the pre-application stage entails, as KOIN 6 explains, it “allows the company to discuss the potential opening of a new drive-thru before submitting an official application for a development permit.” At this part of the process, officials at Gresham will review the pre-application on Wednesday, February 26, but Gresham communications manager Sarah Cagann tried to temper some of the early excitement around the news. “While we would welcome the addition of In-and-Out to our community, this is in the very early stages, and we recognize many things can change along the way,” she told KOIN in an email.
This is some positive movement forward for at least one of the 42 Shari’s locations that suddenly shuttered in Oregon this past October. Shari’s is still battling financial issues that plagued the chain at its closure, most recently facing collections for the $900,000 it owes the Oregon Lottery, dealing with over $1.2 million owed to landlords in unpaid rent, and facing a class-action lawsuit from former employees over the handling of their terminations. Meanwhile, In-N-Out is approved to open a location in Washington County at 10565 Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, and is in talks to open a location near Portland International Airport at Northeast Airport Way and Holman Street. Those two locations would join already-open In-N-Outs in Keizer, Grants Pass, Medford, and Roseburg.
