Bill Naito and Karen Whitman, 1979


William Sumio Naito was a Japanese American Portlander, businessman, and civic leader (1925-1996). He was known for his initiatives to revitalize downtown Portland through historic preservation, property development, and cultural events such as Artquake. Artquake was a Labor Day arts festival held from 1977 to 1995. Bill Naito served as the festival’s Chairman while Karen Whitman was the festival’s director at the time of this photograph.
