Best Farmers Markets in Portland, Beaverton, and Beyond

A late-spring Saturday morning at the Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University.
Portland is surrounded by farmlands. The fertile Willamette Valley is filled with produce fields, vineyards, and orchards, while beyond the Cascades, cattle and bison ranches stretch for miles. Countless Portland restaurants vaunt their commitment to using local fruits, vegetables, grains, game, and dairy—go early to the markets at PSU or Beaverton and you’ll likely bump into your favorite chef purchasing the restaurant’s weekly supply of produce from the same stalls as your neighbors. And as soon as the sun comes out in spring, you’ll find farmers markets packed with couples on morning shopping dates, parents picking out ingredients while their kids frolic, and all sorts of folk content to wander the busy paths, perusing foodstuffs and homemade goods. These markets are integral to Portland’s identity and community, helping farmers and purveyors get their goods onto tables and into kitchens. Here are some of our favorites. Â
Beaverton Farmers Market
On any given Saturday, a lot in central Beaverton between the City Park and City Library is flooded with foot traffic, rain or shine. Shoppers peruse its diverse array of goods, picking out produce from Baird Family Orchards and Clark County Farms or building their own garden with starts from N & M Herb Nursery. Himalayan Dumplings by Kyikyi got its start at the market and continues to sell its plump momos here every week, alongside other food vendors. There’s live music, a kid’s educational group called Market Sprouts, baked goods, and several distilleries pouring spirit samples.

Hillsdale Farmers Market
Held year-round in the parking lot of Rieke Elementary next to the Ida B. Wells High School track, the Hillsdale Farmers Market is the standby for Multnomah Village and South Portland residents. This market is about half-and-half for farm produce vendors—including Gathering Together Farm and Schott Family Farm—and prepared foods sellers like Twisted Croissant and GD Kimbap, making it a solid grab-and-go stop when you’re en route to a picnic or heading to wine country.
sundays 9am–1pm year-round, every other week in winter

A sunny day at the Hollywood Farmers Market.
Hollywood Farmers Market
This year-round market has every kind of produce, baked good, and meat you could ask for, with manageable crowds, a lineup of hot food vendors, and bustling live music. Standouts include Kiyokawa Orchards for all your apple, pear, and cherry needs; Herr Family Farms for carefully curated bouquets; grass-fed bison and elk from Pine Mountain Buffalo Ranch; and veggies from Sun Gold Farms, Flying Coyote Farm, and Stoneboat Farm.

King Farmers Market is one of a handful of Sunday markets in Portland.
King Farmers Market
Under the umbrella of the Portland Farmers Market, this Northeast satellite is right next to the park and playground at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, so the kids can go play while parents shop for buttercream cupcakes from Small Baking Co. and the lineup of frozen sausages from Scratch Meats. Though on the smaller side, with only around 30 vendors, the King Farmers Market is a cult favorite for the sheer quality of the vendors on offer—including ones that garner major lines at PSU. Arrive early for a breakfast burrito from Enchanted Sun (pro tip: The lines are way shorter here than at PSU, where they can stretch for blocks by 11am), and stock up on produce from restaurant chef favorites like Groundwork Organics and regenerative mainstay Winter Green Farm.

A Sunday scene at the Montavilla Farmers Market.
Montavilla Farmers Market
A popular market for east-siders, the Montavilla Farmers Market sits on the eastern slope of Mount Tabor, its colorful tents lining a gravely lot. Visitors shop for field goods from spots like Fiddlehead Farm and Eloisa Organic Farms, as well as a wide array of packaged goods: Hot Mama Salsa, Vtopian Artisan Cheeses, Spice Pilgrim, and other shops make this market feel like a co-op grocer. The market operates year-round on alternating Sundays during the fall and winter and every Sunday in the spring and summer.

A bounty of fresh, local produce at the Portland Farmers Market.
Portland Farmers Market at PSU
The crown jewel of the city’s farmers markets hosts up to 100 vendors each Saturday, and as many as 9,000 shoppers might visit on a single day, from locals to chefs to tourists. Needless to say, lines can get long and parking can be a nightmare (we suggest taking public transit or a bike). But this is the place to be if you want to choose between a dozen heirloom varieties of squash, plus pick up artisan hot sauce, PNW saffron, freshly nixtamalized masa, and goat milk along the way. Don’t forget to grab a stuffed roti wrap from Roam or a slice of thick crust pizza from Via Chicago.

Shemanski Park Farmers Market
Like many downtown entities that cater to workers on their lunch hour, this smaller branch of the Portland Farmers Market—held at the opposite end of the South Park Blocks from the weekend behemoth—saw its attendance dwindle during the pandemic. While it’s not quite back to full strength, it’s still a great place to grab lunch under the trees, pick up ingredients for a midweek dinner, or score a bouquet, some chocolates, or a jar of something yummy when you need a gift. It closes in late fall through spring, but it holds an annual harvest festival the day before Thanksgiving for any last-minute shopping needs.

St. Johns Farmers Market
Long held on the plaza in the heart of downtown St. Johns, this market is now tucked back in the neighborhood and a little harder to find. But there’s plenty to score once shoppers find the market: produce and flowers galore, nerdy knitwear from Geek in Crochet, breads from Dos Hermanos, gin and bourbon from Freeland Spirits, plus ample booths to grab coffee or lunch. The market is managed by St. Johns Center for Opportunity, which also planted a community garden next door.
saturdays 9am–2pm may–nov
Vancouver Farmers Market
This impressive weekend-long market brings serious street fair vibes to downtown Vancouver, selling not just produce but a massive array of hot food, plus flowers, handicrafts, and wine and spirits ideal for gifting. Snack on Taiwanese street food from Small Eats, snag some of the area’s best challah at Julia’s Bakery, buy bottles of Melchemy Craft Mead, and grab summer sweetness from Annie’s Berry Farm. In summer, there’s also the smaller East Vancouver Farmers Market just north of Government Island, open on Thursdays from 10am to 2pm.
