Beloved Film ‘The Goonies,’ Set in Astoria, Oregon, by the Numbers

Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, and Jeff Cohen as Mouth, Mikey, Data, and Chunk in The Goonies.
When Astoria-set, mostly Oregon-shot, Steven Spielberg–guided pirate-treasure adventure film The Goonies hit theaters June 7, 1985, it was the biggest thing since E.T. for kids’ movies. Astoria has thrown annual Goonies Day parties since 2005, but the town and the Oregon Film Museum are going all out for the 40th anniversary of the Gen X touchstone. This year’s weekend celebration, June 5–8, includes bus tours of filming locations, ticketed photo ops on the Truffle Shuffle stump, and an ’80s prom. The current owners of the Walsh home—part of the fictional “Goon Docks” area about to be demolished for a golf course in the movie—are even opening their doors for a limited number of tours, with proceeds going to the film museum’s planned expansion.
