Baseball Recap: Oregon Ducks vs Portland Pilots

Your #15 Oregon Ducks took on the Portland Pilots on a rainy Wednesday evening matchup. The Ducks kicked things off early, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on a monster home run by Jacob Walsh. But the Pilots would answer back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and would tie the game with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 3rd, with both runs coming courtesy of freshman Trey Swygart.

Oregon would plate two more runs in the top of the 5th, after an error by UP first baseman Doyle Kane, but the bottom half of the inning would see the Pilots score on two wild pitches and a bases-loaded walk, giving them a 5-4 lead after 5. But the Ducks weren’t quite done, with Anson Aroz sending a 2-1 pitch over the wall for a 2-run homer of his own, and giving Oregon the lead once more, 6-5. However, the Pilots weren’t finished either, with third baseman Zach Toglia swinging at the first pitch he saw in the 7th inning and, sending it over the left field wall for a solo home run, tying the game at 6 after 7 innings. The Ducks would put two men on base in the top of the 9th inning, but couldn’t bring them in, setting the table for Portland to walk it off with a two out bases loaded, HBP to win them the game 7-6.

Man, what a heartbreaking way to lose a ballgame. The Ducks pitching just hasn’t been able to close things down the last few games, unfortunately. The offense is there (well, most of the time), but the pitching has got to step it up if they want to get back to the winning ways that we saw to start the season. Tough loss last night, but they’ll have to get their minds right quick with the Michigan Wolverines coming to town from April 4th – 6th.

As always, ‘Sco Ducks.
