KBPS Asian Voice Cultural Programs, 1983

The Asian Voice was a one-hour broadcast that ran every Sunday at 8 p.m. on KBPS starting in 1981. At the time, KBPS was the only AM station licensed to a public school district. A group of twenty volunteer producers broadcast news, familiar music, stories, and dramas to members of the growing Southeast Asian community living in Portland. The program was lauded for providing “occasional sounds from their homelands” to middle-aged and elderly Southeast Asians, and creating an “experience in tradition” for the young.

In 1982, KBPS Asian Voice applied for and received a MultiArts grant to expand their resources and produce six special cultural broadcasts that would be dedicated to a specific dialect: Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and Mien. This flyer was produced to announce the programs and broadcast schedule.
