1910 St. Johns Riot | Vintage Portland

As early as 1906, workers from the Punjabi region of what is now northwest India came to the Pacific Northwest to work at places such as the Monarch Lumber Mill and St. Johns Lumber Mill, pictured here (circa 1935). On March 21, 1910, two hundred St. Johns residents rioted in the town’s main square against Eastern Indians residing in the area. The rioters forcibly placed Punjabi workers on trains, sending them south to Portland. While many Indian workers returned to St. Johns to continue the fight in court, few attackers were ever convicted.
