Oregon Ducks Weekend Tennis Recaps


Women’s Tennis

The women’s team faced a tall task on Saturday against the #5 Michigan Wolverines. The meet went about as expected against a national title contender as the Ducks were swept 4-0. There was little doubt how things were going to end. Oregon lost the first two doubles matches (6-0 and 6-2) and then three singles matches each in straight sets. The Ducks other three competitors were all trailing in match sets when the meet was decided.

On Sunday the meet against #58 Michigan State went down to the wire but ended in the Spartans favor. Unlike most meets this year, Oregon got things started right by taking the doubles point thanks to decisive victories by Marjorie Souza/Candela Aparisi and Tilde Jagare/Juliet Santitto. MSU quickly turned the tide with wins in the first two singles matches to finish. Patsy Daughters tied the meet at 2-2 winning 6-3, 6-4.

It looked like the Ducks were done when the Spartans took their third singles match to take a 3-2 lead. Karin young fell behind losing her first set 3-6, but rebounded to take sets two and three by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to force a decisive match on court one.

Though Marjorie Souza came back from a first set loss to win her second, she fell in the third set to give Michigan State 4-3 victory.

The women will look to end their four meet losing streak this weekend as they end their season at home. The “corn belt” schools come west as Oregon takes on #32 Iowa (11 AM Friday) and #73 Nebraska (9 AM Sunday) at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.


The men were also on the road this past weekend, in their case in the Hoosier State. Beginning in Bloomington against Indiana on Friday the Ducks got off to a fast start by taking the doubles point with victories by Lenn Luemkemann/Burton Matthew and Vlad Breazu/Clement Lemire. Vlad Breazu kept the momentum going taking the first singles match in straight sets. The Hoosiers got on the board to close within 2-1, but three set victories by Lenn Luemkemann and Lachlan Robertson clinched the meet for the Ducks.

Sunday’s early morning meet in West Lafayette against Purdue didn’t go nearly as well. The Ducks dropped the doubles point 2-0 to fall behind early. Victories by Matthew Burton and , Lachlan Robertson put Oregon on the board but the Boilermakers took three of the first five singles matches to take the meet (full results).

Oregon will be looking to sweep the Land of Lincoln schools at home this weekend to end the regular season above .500. The men take on Illinois on Friday at 3 M and Northwestern Sunday at 1 PM. Both meets will take place the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.
