Oregon Ducks Sunday Basketball Lacrosse Recap

Women’s Basketball – Second Round vs. Duke

#10 Oregon women’s basketball turned in a surprisingly dominant performance in the first half of their second-round match against the #2 Duke Blue Devils. They led the entire half and went into the locker room with a 28-23 lead.

Coming out of the break, two 3-point shots by Ashlon Jackson gave Duke the lead, and although the Ducks would draw close they would not get the lead back..

Oregon pulled to within one in the middle of the 4th period, but did not hit any buckets in the last four and a half minutes. Duke did enough to stay ahead and won 59-53.

Oregon had two strikes going against them in this game – Elisa Mevius was out due to her broken hand, and Peyton Scott went out with an injury midway into the game, and did not return.

Ashlon Jackson was quiet the entire first half, and scored all of her team-leading 20 points in the second half. Regan Richardson scored 13 points and Delaney Thomas scored 12 points.

As a team, Duke’s edge came from scoring 18 points off turnovers to Oregon’s 9, and they shot 41.2% from distance to 28.6% for the Ducks.

Deja Kelly carried this Oregon team, ending with her second 20+ point performance in as many games. Kelly had 20 points, and Phillipina Kyei scored 14.

Oregon finishes the season with a 20-12 record. Despite their struggles through the season, they proved to be a considerably better team than the ones we had seen the past couple of seasons.

Deja Kelly had this to say after the last game of her collegiate career:

Men’s Basketball – Second Round vs. Arizona

The #5 Oregon Ducks’ second round match against the #4 Arizona Wildcats was everything that we have come to expect when these former Pac-12 rivals play. After Oregon dominated Arizona for most of the first half, the Wildcats settled and the Ducks did not regain the lead.

It was all Oregon in the beginning of the game.

But the Wildcats responded with a run of their own and eventually took the lead for good at the 4:19 mark in the first half.

Arizona led by as much as 11 in the second half, but Oregon clawed back to within one point in the final two minutes, after a long shot by Keeshawn Barthelemy and a hook shot by Nate Bittle with 49 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats played great basketball in those 49 seconds, using defense and fouls to keep Oregon from tying the game or taking a lead, and won 87-83.

Arizona had five players finish in the double digits, led by 29 from Caleb Love.

Jackson Shelstad led the Oregon scorers with 26 points, while TJ Bamba scored 17 and Nate Bittle scored 16.

Two major factors contributed to this loss in the second round; 1) The Ducks were horrible at the free throw line, shooting 12-22 for 54.5%, and 2) They apparently forgot how to box out and gave up the glass. Arizona made Oregon pay for that, pulling down 13 offensive boards, to 3 for the Ducks.

Oregon men’s basketball finishes with a 25-10 record, and will bow out of this year’s tournament lamenting what could have been. In a season where injuries were not what hamstrung the teams of the previous two seasons, they only have themselves to blame for their inability to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Here are your highlights of the match:

Lacrosse vs. Penn State

Oregon lacrosse is looking for their first conference win, having dropped previous matches to Ohio State and Rutgets. They’re still searching for that first win after losing to Penn State yesterday in Papé Field, 19-10.

The Ducks jumped to an early lead, going ahead 4-2 after the first period, but PSU responded in the second period with two goals in the first minute and a half to tie the game, then pulled ahead. The Ducks were not able to keep pace, much less catch up, at that point.

In the second half, the Nittany Lions had 22 shots to 11 for the Ducks.

Goalkeeper Paige Crowther got the start for this match and tied her career-high of seven saves in the game.

Bri Carrasquillo led the Oregon scorers with five goals, and Anna Simmons scored twice and added an assist.

Oregon lacrosse (5-5, 0-3 Big-10) next travels to Maryland for a match against the Terps on Thursday. That game will be at 2:00 pm PT and you can see it on B1G+.
