Influential Portland, Oregon Tasting Menu Restaurants Quaintrelle Will Close at the End of the Year
Acclaimed Portland tasting menu restaurant Quaintrelle will close on January 1, 2025, after eight years open; the New Year’s Eve dinner service will be the restaurant’s last. Quaintrelle first opened in 2016 with Ava Gene’s alumnus Bill Wallender leading the kitchen. In the following years, the restaurant was home to Portland chefs including Ryley Eckersley and the late Naomi Pomeroy. The most recent iteration of the restaurant saw Elijah Rivers take the helm as executive chef in April 2024.
Quaintrelle announced its closure in an Instagram post on December 17. “From surviving a pandemic to thriving in two different locations, it’s been an incredible journey full of triumphs and unforgettable moments—all made possible by you, our supporters,” the post reads. Eater Portland reached out for further comment about the closure but hasn’t heard back.
Throughout its tenure, Quaintrelle has served a menu that celebrates Portland’s natural bounty by sourcing from local farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. While an a la carte menu is offered, the restaurant’s raison d’être is its 7- or 10-course tasting menu that spans two and a half to three hours. While the menu constantly evolved, in fall 2024 featured dishes include foie gras with fig, plum, and pistachio; hamachi with nuoc cham, radish, and cilantro, curry with mushroom, apples, and a crepe; and octopus with shishito and nduja.
Quaintrelle’s announcement comes on the heels of the closure of Matthew Lightner’s ambitious McMinnville tasting menu restaurant, Okta, in September 2024. Portlanders have until the end of the month to experience Quaintrelle, with reservations for December available now.
