Oregon Ducks Baseball Drowns Rhode Island In A 15-2 Win

Oregon baseball finished the weekend series against Rhode Island with a very Oregon-y rain delay, followed by a rare run rule to defeat the Rams, 15-2.

The Ducks brought Will Sanford to the mound for the start. Sanford had a rough start, and gave up and walked three batters, with the third walk coming with the bases loaded and accounting for Rhode Island’s first score. After that, however, Sanford found his control and struck out the next three batters to close out the top of the frame.

The Ducks responded with Burke-Lee Mabeus singling to left field with the bases loaded, and brought home the two runners in scoring position.

After a double steal, Jax Gimenez grounded out to get the third run of the inning, sending Oregon into the second inning with a 3-1 lead.

Sanford continued to be solid in the 2nd, and the Rams did not score. In the bottom of the inning, the Ducks picked up another run to make it a 4-1 ball game.

In the third inning, Sanford got a fly-out and gave up a double, and then the rain took over the game. The rain delay lasted for nearly three hours. When the weather broke, Michael Meckna went to the mound. The runner on second scored with a Rams RBI single.

And then, just like that, Rhode Island’s bats were silent for the remainder of the game. Meckna had a very fine outing in relief, only allowing two hits in 3.2 innings of pitching.

In the bottom of the 4th, Mabeus hits the first home run of his career for a grand slam, giving the Ducks an 8-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, with Oregon now up 9-2, Jacob Walsh hit a 2 RBI double and set a program record for multi-RBI games with 38.

In the 7th inning, Anson Aroz hit Oregon’s second grand slam of the day, ending the game on a previously-arranged run rule victory, 15-2.

Here is the final line for Sunday’s game:

Here was Coach Waz’s comments after the game:

Anson Aroz had this to say about his slam and the delay:

With that, Oregon picked up the series win 3-1, and did not drop very much in the rankings.

And Burke-Lee Mabeus earned a B1G Co-Freshman of the week nod.

Oregon baseball continues their home stand this coming weekend and will play four games against the Columbia Lions. The first game of the series will be Friday at 3:05 pm at PK Park.
