Marie Smith, 1977 | Vintage Portland
Happy Black History Month! Today we celebrate activist and Portland civic leader, Marie Smith (1898-1991). Smith was the first woman President of the Portland Chapter NAACP (1949-1950) and a co-founder of the Oregon Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. She continued to be in service to the Portland Black community for over 50 years through her involvement in Model Cities Task Force, Urban League of Portland, YMCA, Albina Citizen’s War on Poverty Committee, and so much more.
