Blazers’ Matisse Thybulle: The NBA’s 3-point Shot-Blocking Specialist

Portland Trail Blazers wing Matisse Thybulle isn’t just a defensive savant at logging steals. He’s also the best in the game at blocking 3-pointers.

Owen Phillips researched the best 3-point shot blockers for an article on his Substack The F5 (subscription required). He found Thybulle led the league in 3s blocked over the last three seasons with 44 over that span.

Matisse Thybulle leads all players in blocked threes, which is impressive considering he played in just 15 games last year. I heard a secondhand story once that Terrance Ross used to tell the people around him that Thybulle was the only defender who could block his shot.

Thybulle has appeared in 151 games over the last three seasons, 102 with Portland and 49 with the Philadelphia 76ers before being traded at the 2023 trade deadline. During the last three seasons, Thybulle has totaled 90 blocks, meaning just under half of his total blocks come from behind the 3-point arc.

Following Thybulle on the list is Indiana Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton, who has blocked 38 shots from deep over the past three seasons. The other players with at least 30 blocked 3s during that span include Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, and New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones, who have 33 blocks, 32 blocks, and 30 blocks, respectively.
