New Orleans Pelicans’ Derik Queen Undergoes Wrist Surgery

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen underwent surgery to repair a torn scapholunate ligament in his left wrist and will be re-evaluated in approximately 12 weeks, the organization announced Friday.

Queen, the No. 13 pick in June’s NBA Draft, sustained the injury in Tuesday’s NBA Summer League game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The 6-foot-10 big man out of Maryland put up 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and eight turnovers in 28 minutes during the 93-87 loss to Yang Hansen and the Blazers.

That was Queen’s third and final appearance in Summer League. He averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game at the event.

Queen’s 12-week re-evaluation timeline runs into October, typically around the time when NBA training camp is already well underway and preseason games are tipping off.

Queen is already facing outsized pressure considering New Orleans gave up an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to move up 10 spots to select him. This injury news is a tough early blow.
