Orlando Magic Trade for Memphis Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane

The Orlando Magic has traded for Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Sunday morning. The Magic is sending a package to the Grizzlies that includes Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap.

Charania detailed the specifics of the outgoing picks in his report:

Orlando is sending Memphis the No. 16 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, its 2026 first-round pick (which includes swap rights with the Phoenix Suns or Washington Wizards) and its 2028 and 2030 unprotected first-round selections, sources said. The pick swap is top-two protected in 2029.

The acquisition of the two-way, sharpshooting guard adds a needed offensive punch to Orlando’s core while not sacrificing the team’s defensive identity. Bane, 26, averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game this past season for the Grizzlies, while shooting 39.2% from behind the 3-point line. Bane’s scoring abilities will be welcomed to an Orlando offense that ranked 28th in scoring and dead last in 3-point shooting percentage.

The Magic finished the regular season with a 41-41 record, entering the postseason as the No. 7 seed in the East. Orlando fell to the Boston Celtics in the first round in five games.

The Grizzlies finished the regular season with a 48-34 record, qualifying for the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the West after making it out of the play-in. Memphis got swept out of the first round in four games by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In corresponding local news, one would imagine this Orlando swing for a high-scoring guard means the franchise won’t also be dealing for Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons this summer. While there was never any firm reporting surrounding a possible deal between the two franchises, the Simons-to-Orlando transaction seemed to be a collective dream held by bloggers and fans, generating a lot of buzz over the last few seasons in mock trade scenarios.
