Former Pac-12 Storylines – Addicted To Quack

I do miss the Pac-12, even as I hated that it did close to nothing for my Oregon Ducks. What I probably miss the most is playing against known teams with known histories against those teams. I knew who all the coaches were. I have not a clue who coaches Rutgers or Iowa…I’ll get there, but I’m not there yet.

But after watching the slow-motion train wreck that was the Pac-12, I’m still intrigued by the former teams and what is going on. To wit:

California

Justin Wilcox is still with the Bears, and has not had a winning season since 2019. Cal appears to have a tortured existence in the ACC. Wilcox appears to not be in danger of being escorted out the door. What the heck is going on?

Stanford

The Cardinal has been a dumpster fire the past two seasons under Troy Taylor, who replaced David Shaw. Then, as Luck would have it, Stanford hires Andrew Luck as a GM. Luck has fired Taylor and hired Frank Reich as an interim coach. Stanford is picking up some decent recruits – is there renewed life in The Farm?

Arizona

Brent Brennan replaced Jedd Fisch last year as head coach, and the Wildcats had a 4-8 season. It seems to me that AZ was completely under my radar, and I didn’t notice anything about them. Was that the same for you? Is it likely to be that way next season?

Arizona State

We knew Kenny Dillingham was special as Oregon’s OC. He left for his alma mater in spite of the badness that Herm Edwards left him. Even with sanctions, ASU was amazing last year, reaching the CFP Quarterfinal.

How can you not love this guy?

Chip Kelly left UCLA high and dry last season and bolted for Ohio State. DeShaun Foster went 5-7 in his first year with the Bruins. Are they going to tread water, or are they on the upswing?

USC

Lincoln Riley went 8-5 in 2023 and 7-6 in 2024. USC has landed some decent recruits of late, but is it going to matter? Are the Trojans destined for continued mediocrity or are they going to turn this thing around? Are you keeping track of USC in anticipation of the train completely derailing?

Utah

I thought the story was that the Utes were going to march in and roll over the Big XII!? That didn’t happen. Kyle Whittingham appears to be on the verge of retiring. Utah tied for 13th in the Big XII – was that a surprise to you? Is this just a lull and the Utes will swing back?

Colorado

The Buffs went 9-4 in Deion Sanders’ second season. Significant star talent went to the NFL. As recently as yesterday, Sanders is again dealing with health issues. Is Colorado going to be able to maintain their current upward trajectory?

Washington

We know how Kalen DeBoer left not much in the cupboard for the next coach, similar to how Chip Kelly left UCLA. Jedd Fisch left Arizona and posted a 6-7 record last year. Is he the guy to turn things around in Seattle?

Washington State and Oregon State

I don’t even know who coaches the Cougars and Beavers these days. They are in this strange Pac-12 limbo where we kind of have a Pac-12 and kind of don’t. The questions here are 1) Will the Pac-12 survive, and 2) Will OSU and WSU be viable entities even in a rebuilt Pac-12?

Now for some quick polls regarding these teams. If there’s enough interest in a team or subject, I’d be happy to dig further for y’all.
